South Africans Against Drunk Driving dedicated 67 minutes, in memory of Nelson Mandela, by showing support to road crash victims in local hospitals.

Pietermaritzburg, 18th July 2017 Local non-profit, South Africans Against Drunk Driving have shown their continued support to road crash victims. This year we have added Northdale hospital to the facilities that we visit.

This effort is inspired by the international campaign to reserve 67 minutes on Nelson Mandela’s birthday to alleviate some of the social injustices within your community.

SADD was fortunate to find sponsorship from local businesses like SuperSpar Hilton Quarry centre, Hilton Pharmacy and Good Hope. They donated a wide range of cosmetics and trinkets in an effort to uplift the patients.

A total of thirty long term patients were visited by SADD, and majority of the patients, like the previous year, were pedestrians, internationally recognized as vulnerable road users, who often suffer the most from negligent driving.

“We are happy to have added Northdale to the hospitals we visit on Mandela Day. We were able to reach more patients this year, and in essence touch more lives. Thank you especially to the cooperative staff from all three hospitals we would not have been able to see these patients without their help. As a road safety organization we continue to call for more responsible driving on our roads. We were able to help thirty patients, but they were many more in the wards that were road crash victims. Most of the cases involved negligent driving practices. Road safety needs to be a priority. ”

SADD hopes for more proactive approaches from government and civil society to reduce the injuries and deaths that plague our roads.
