World Day of Remembrance – 2021

World Day of Remembrance (WDoR) is held internationally on the 3rd Sunday of November, or as close to that as possible.

SADD are teaming up with the WC Blood services to ask for blood donations for the future road crash victims, as well as asking families to come along with a picture of their loved one.

The blood drive will be at the WC blood service,  Blue Route shopping centre, Cape Town from 12 – 3pm on Friday 19th November.

The objectives of WDoR 2021 are to provide a platform for road traffic victims and their families to:

  • remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads;
  • acknowledge the crucial work of the emergency services;
  • draw attention to the generally trivial legal response to culpable road deaths and injuries
  • advocate for better support for road traffic victims and victim families;
  • promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries

WDoR 2021 puts the spotlight on the reduction of traffic speeds – Low speeds, which have the potential to prevent many deaths and serious injuries, in particular those of pedestrians and all other vulnerable road users – children, elderly and the disabled.”

Launch of SADC Alliance of Road Safety NGOs 2021

Since 2014 Southern Africans NGOs who are part of the Global Alliance of Road Safety and Road Victims NGO’s (GA)  have been trying to establish a SADC Alliance of NGOs.

Funding from the GA, for the U.N. Road Safety Week, allowed the formation and launch of the SADC Alliance of Road Safety NGOs’ on 20th May 2021.

Road Crashes are a major burden and expense to Africa. Of all vehicles registered globally, approximately only 2 % are registered in Africa however we account for 14 % of all fatalities.

This does not exclude the SADC Region.
Since 2014, Road Safety NGO’s from Africa have attempted to establish a forum that can represent Africa globally.
Unfortunately, due to language barriers and due to differences in problematic areas concerning Road Safety issues this could not be established.

The following international dignitaries presented at the Official Inauguration  :Mr Jean Todt (Secretary Generals Special Envoy for Road Safety and FIA President) , Dr Etienne Krug( Director, Social Determinants of Health, W.H.O.) , Dr Margie Peden (Senior Research Fellow, head of Injury, George Institute, UK),   Placid Badji (Transport Policy Officer, African Union) and Patrick Kinyanjui (M & E and Project manager, GA).

The SADC Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety was established in May 2021, with the help of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, as an Association Not for Gain, consisting of voluntary Road Safety NGOs, with limited liabilities, from SADC Members states and affiliated global organizations. We aim to enhance the capacity of NGOs and provide them with networking opportunities that will enable them to work closely with governments towards the harmonization of Road Safety principles and policies, providing for safer roads for the approximately 350 million people residing within the SADC Region.

To date, we represent 14 Road Safety NGOs operating in 11 SADC Member States.

We are affiliated to the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety and have been granted consultative membership to the Roads, Road Transport and Road Traffic Committee of the SADC Secretariat which is linked to the African Union Commission.

United Nations Global Road Safety Week: 17th-21st May 2021.

During UN Global Road Safety Week, South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) obtained the commitment of Alderman Felicity Purchase, the Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, City of Cape Town, who holds the ability to change speed limits in the local area, to reduce speed limits around most schools in the Zonnebloem area of Cape Town to 30 km/h at selective times of day (when children are arriving at or leaving school).

The commitment was obtained at an event held jointly with fellow Alliance member Global Road Safety Partnership South Africa attending the event on 19 May 2021 in Zonnebloem and took the form of a pledge signed by the Alderman utilizing the #CommitToAct.

The commitment was welcomed by the schools in the area.  Deon May, Principal of Zonnebloem Boys’ Primary said, “The Zonnebloem schools are extremely happy and excited about the launch of the streets for life campaign in the Zonnebloem/District 6 area. In the afternoons, hundreds of learners from the surrounding schools meet their learner transport in the area … Both taxis and private vehicles often speed down and up this road. We’ve had two learner fatalities and 6 serious injuries from surrounding schools and many horrific accidents due to speeding and or lack of road user sense. The Love 30km will definitely assist in reducing fatal accidents.” The Principal was a key community stakeholder for SADD, facilitating connections to the other Principals in the area and mobilizing parents to sign a petition, which received 408 signatures, for the City to alter the speed limit around the schools.

The NGO benefits from the commitment being crafted very specifically, in collaboration with the Mayor’s committee, in a way that is being following up even though Alderman Purchase has moved to another department. The process is well underway to being implemented in the near future.

Cycling Projects 2021

SADD are passionate about the rights of all road users. More Govt effort must be put into facilities for Non motorized transport of walkers and  cyclists, instead of focusing almost exclusively on vehicles needs .

This past year SADD have attended safer cycling drives with PedalPower/ Stay Wider of the Rider and Open Streets Cape Town, and will continue to look at improving the needs of both these vulnerable road users VRU’s
