March Varsity College PMB “Just Be Responsible” Day
On the 7th of March the SADD team attended the NGO Connex Day at Varsity College, under the theme “Just Be Responsible”.
A “road” was imagined for the students to walk along while using the Drunk Goggles. They then had to catch a set of keys and put them into a container. Kicking a soccer ball also helped to show how impaired you could be after drinking alcohol.
T-shirts, wristbands, Units of Alcohol cards, and info pamphlets were distributed to the students. We had an extremely good response from the students who were queuing up to have a turn at using the goggles. The non-drinkers wanted to know what it felt like to be drunk, and the heavy drinkers wanted to test their “drinking fitness”.
Global Road Safety Leadership Course March 2018
Caro Smit was very honoured to have been been nominated for the Global Road Safety Leadership Course (GRSLC) that was held from March 04 to 17 in Nairobi, Kenya. This course was co-organized by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and the Johns Hopkins University International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU) with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

CPUT Cape Town Wellness Day
On the 25th of April the SADD team joined the Student Wellness Centre at CPUT’s Cape Town Campus for a wellness day for the youth. We had a great time teaching all the students about units of alcohol and drinking responsibly.
We even gave some lessons to the nurses and doctors working at the Centre who tried on our Drunk Goggles.
Students who do not drink were able to learn how to educate their drinking friends, and those who do drink learnt about how much alcohol is in each drink. The girls were mostly surprised to learn how many units there are in a Savanna Dry, and the boys were surprised about how many units they were consuming in one night, and how long it would take them to get sober.
Varsity College Road Safety Presentation
On the 25th of April, we also attended a Varsity College Road Safety event.
Students learnt about road safety, drink driving, and responsible alcohol use.
February CPUT Wellington Wellness Day
On the 23rd of February, our Strategic Analyst Philli headed out to Wellington to assist with their Wellness Day. The event was well attended by hundreds of CPUT students, who had a wonderful time learning about Units of Alcohol and trying on our “Drunk Goggles”. Sister Tanya was very welcoming, and also enjoyed engaging with our material, which she will help distribute to the students.
